A Good Find

A few months back I stumbled across the cute boutique in Chelsea called The Habitat Shop (no relation to the charity). It's filled with affordable clothing, jewelry and home accessories - most of the time they are having a sale, which makes it that much better.

I love finding unique places like this shop where I can snag good deals on cute things. It's sometimes hard to find in NYC but I'm always on the look-out.

I recently bought pillows with a geometric pattern for my sofa (sorry for the bad picture) - which go great with my drapes (thanks again mom).
And I just snagged these two pieces, which were 50% off!

Fall Finds...Jackets

This morning I woke up to Fall. I love the beginnings of each season as they promise a fresh start. Wait, let me change that. I love the beginnings of Spring, Summer and Fall. Winter, not so much.

I also love the start of the seasons because that means shopping time, which I plan to do very soon.

In the Fall you can wear cute jackets before the real cold weather comes (well, at least in NYC). Once winter moves in, I'm stuck wearing my big puffy brown coat (you know the one that I refused to buy, but when I moved to the city it was a must-have).

Today's weather inspired me to look around for new cute fall jackets and here are a few from Emerson Made that I love. (By the way, they have giveaways each month, so check them out).

My how quickly the summer is going. That always seems to happen though. I'm eagerly awaiting some sun, sand and R&R down in Nags Heads in July. It will be here before we know it and for that I'm very grateful.

Now, back to the post. When we first moved to the Upper West Side, I remember seeing Tim Gunn walk across Broadway with a grocery bag of odds and ends, including paper towels. My first thought was, "Tim Gunn! He shops just like us." My second thought was, "Oh crap, what am I wearing?" If you don't know who Tim Gunn is (which, I guess if you don't get Bravo or now, Lifetime then maybe I can understand) then you would want to know why I would worry about my outfit. See, Mr. Gunn is a fashion consultant/guru, most well known for being on Project Runway.
Tim Gunn is my neighbor too. It has become a joke with The Husband and myself, who can see him more? So far I'm winning. He lives in the building right beside us and I probably see him at least twice a week as I walk Miss Bailey. Of course, it's usually in the mornings when I'm wearing my pajamas outside (yes, I know. I wore my pajamas outside.). I was mortified as I walked past him. They weren't even cute pajamas but an old Elon tee-shirt and bright Carolina blue shorts. Ick.

A few weeks ago I saw him (again, walking Bailey) but I was prepared with a more appropriate outfit. This time, I got a little smile. Score.

Just last week, The Husband and I were talking and I mentioned that I hadn't seen my friend, Mr. Gunn in the mornings, per usual. That afternoon, I stepped on the 2 train and lo and behold, there he was. I quickly looked down at my outfit and noticed that it was not my best, but still not pajamas, so I was okay.

I think we should be friends. Maybe one of these days I'll get the nerve to say hello and maybe ask for a picture. Of course, only if I'm wearing a good outfit.

Savage Beauty

This past weekend, The Husband's parents were in town visiting. I'm so fortunate to have in-laws that are awesome. We always have a great time together and as my grandmother would say, "ain't nobody hit nobody with nothin'."

My father-in-law is a very talented artist. We even have one of his pieces hanging in our kitchen (note to self: take picture of aforementioned piece for blog readers). Since he is an artist, we usually go to the Met, once or even twice, during their visits and listen to him as he gives us short lessons on paintings, drawings, exhibits, etc., always teaching us something unique and interesting.

While we were there, I noticed a line of people wrapped around an exhibit. Whenever I see a line, I ask myself, "Do I need to be there? Is it that good?" Well, I quickly learned that it was the Alexander McQueen, Savage Beauty, exhibit. Though, I wasn't about to stand in line, I did peak around the corner and saw two of his dresses - gorgeous! I'm hoping to go back to the Met after work this week to check out the full exhibit and hopefully avoid the line. Here are some shots from the site. Stunning!

P.S., The BBQ festival was also this past weekend. Though we missed this year's festivities we have been in the past and it was delicious. Did any of you New Yorker's make it out? There was a one NC BBQ restaurant there.

Right before the weather starts to turn, I get quite sick of my clothes. Does that happen to any of y'all? This morning I just stared at the inside of my closet like it was a black hole, trying to figure out something that didn't feel like "winter" to me. I think this week I will switch out my clothes from cold weather to warm-er (emphasis on the "er" because it's not really that warm).

The other day while blog surfing, I stumbled upon the clothing site, EmersonMade. I'm sure many of y'all have heard of it but it was new to me. Faces of Fashion - Fall 2010

I'm still hanging on tight to my rainbows, tees and shorts but it's inevitable, fall is coming. The fall fashion magazines are on stands now and by golly they are heavy! In fact, the most recent issue of New York Magazine is dedicated in full to fashion. One section I enjoyed the most in New York Magazine this week was the "Faces of Fashion." The photography is great and captures designers, models, bloggers and fashionistas alike, so simply and so real. Sometimes the fashion trends are a bit daunting, but the faces behind the clothes tell a different story. Raleigh Denim

I love a good story - especially a story that tells of the little guy making it big, not to mention the little guy (and girl) from Raleigh, NC making it big.

My brother sent me the below video about two aspiring jean designers who founded a company called Raleigh Denim. Victor and Sarah Lytvinenko started a jeans company out of their Raleigh apartment in 2007 - jeans that are now available for purchase in Barneys NY. Pretty cool huh? Yet, they haven't forgotten their roots, as Raleigh Denim's mission is to help revitalize the garment industry in North Carolina. Check out their inspiring story below:

Happy Friday everyone! Thank goodness the weekend is almost here - and to celebrate, here's the new Sex and the City 2 trailer...looks fabulous!! Can't wait to see Carrie and the girls in May.

Stella & Dot

Everywhere I look someone new is talking about Stella & Dot jewelry. A handful of my Facebook and blog friends have become stylists and many of them are throwing jewelry parties for girlfriends at their homes.

They definitely have some cute and affordable things, especially for the summer. Here are a handful of items that I would love to have. I really love the dogwood ring, especially since it's the picture in my blog header that my brother made (North Carolina state flower).

Many Many Monograms

If you’re from the South, it’s unlikely that you don’t own something with your monogram – a silver necklace, pillow shams, glasses, cooler, towels, wallet, cutting board, ice bucket and even an ironing board cover. Yes, I actually have all of the aforementioned monogrammed items (and more) living with me in my 700 sq. foot apartment; I made sure to make room for what’s most important. I definitely have my priorities straight. Not sure if The Husband would agree. Here’s a picture of the ironing board cover if you didn’t believe me. The ironing board is pretty cool too - thanks, Graham.

I’m a lover of the monogram - the idea that everyone can have their own personal logo. I always said if I were going to get a tattoo, I would get my monogram. Fear not mother-dear, I would never go through with it.

What is it about the overlapping and combining of letters to form a symbol that Southerners love so dearly?

Much to my chagrin, Southern in the City has yet to find a great place in NY to purchase fun monogram pieces. If any of you know, please do tell this girl.

Of late, I’ve stuck to shopping online, so check out two of my favorite sites and hopefully in time for the holiday season, I’ll have some recommendations for places in the City.
