Onward and Upward

To say that the last two weeks at work have been challenging is an understatement. While I cannot go into anymore detail for fear that someone from work is actually reading this blog, I will end my comments there. Onward and upward right? Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I left work today feeling not so Southern in the City. I usually leave things at the office, turn on my iPod and walk home to the beat of my beach music or Glee songs or something equally cheerful. After a quick drink with The Husband before his dart match (yes, he is on a dart team and has been for years), I walked down the subway steps with work still on the brain. And then the subway didn't come. I waited and waited and waited. And waited some more. I waited for half an hour before giving up and hailing a cab. Then I waited and waited and waited some more. Non working subway + rush hour = no cabs.

Except then something nice happened. An older gentlemen offered to share a cab with me uptown. Before you start asking if it's safe to share cabs with strange men, which I wouldn't do usually but like I mentioned, it's been a long day, I eagerly accepted his invitation.

His name is Lionel and he owns a small music company in Chelsea. He has lived on the upper west side for more than 35 years. We spent the ride talking about our favorite places to eat, our favorite parts of the neighborhood, his wife, The Husband, his beach house on Long Island, upcoming trips and such.

As the cab driver pulled over for Lionel's stop, he shook my hand, said nice to meet you and then paid for my cab. Very un-New York like. And just like that, my bad day turned good. Onward and upward.

  2. I would challenge that it is actually very New York like. Once you become a veteran, people can see it on your face, that The City can swallow you under if you stop and think how hard it is. Not being able to leave work at the office, very New York like. Finding a six block radius near the apt and not leaving it...New York like. New Yorkers look out for their own. Perhaps you appear to be one.
